I am currently Full Professor in the Department of Geophysics and Meteorology. and my teaching areas are Physical Oceanography, North Atlantic Climate Variability, Statistics, general physics, and Numerical Computation. I am also chair of the Master in Meteorology and Geophysics at UCM.

I received my B.   in Physics from Complutense University of Madrid (UCM), Spain, in 1994, and the Ph.D. degree in Physics in 2001 from the Thesis "Relationship between the Iberian Peninsula anomalous precipitation regime and the North Atlantic atmospheric low frequency variability ". After the PhD,I focused my research in the tropical Atlantic SST influence on the North Atlantic anomalous rainfall regime (Rodriguez-Fonseca and Serrano, 2002; Rodriguez-Fonseca and Castro, 2002; Rodriguez-Fonseca et al., 2006).

Under this topic, I started to direct my first national project in 2002 with the aim of performing sensitivity experiments in relation to SST-forced teleconnections and impacts on the North Atlantic sector (project REN2002-03424) . From that time is our first collaboration with Dr Roberto Mechoso from the UCLA and in 2004 the UCLA-AGCM was running at UCM. The first work done with this model was to test the observational evidence of a subtropical north Atlantic forcing on the winter anomalous atmospheric regime , with the example of  the winter of 1995(Losada et al.,2007).

In 2005, I started to lead the work of the UCM group in the European Project AMMA (African Monsoon Multidisciplinary Analysis), in relation to the West African monsoon and the global climate variability. Thanks to this project and other national projects (the national projects TROVA: Tropical Atlantic: dynamics, impacts and teleconnections and the national projects MOVAC and TRACS)), the Tropical Atlantic Variability Group started to grow and different topics related to the interannual to interdecadal SST forced atmospheric climate variability started to be investigated.

In 2010 ends AMMA and in 2011 we started a strong collaboration with the University Cheick Anta Diop in Dakar (Senegal) to study Sahelian climate variability and predictability. I advised the PhD of Ibrahima Diouf about malaria predictability. Also, different collaborations were launched about different climate services topics: upwelling and fisheries, public health, water resources and energy. In this active cooperational project with the University Cheik Anta Diop of Dakar, we designed a statistical rainfall seasonal prediction model for the Sahel (S4CAST), considering the multidecadal modulation of the ocean and predictors (PhD Thesis of Roberto Suarez Moreno) . About climate and health, I have advised the PhD of Ibrahima Diouf from Senegal but also I have led 10 cooperational projects with this University.   This collaboration is   alive and sustainable. Every year I visit the UCAD to teach about statistical analysis of climate data and advise PhD students, but also to continue the research. Currently I am advising, together with Teresa Losada, the PhD Thesis, expected to be defended in June 2024, of Adama Badiane about ENSO impact on tropical cyclones affecting the coast of West Africa. Also, I am the PhD advisor of Mame Diarra Diouf, together with Marta Martin and Ibrahima Diouf and Amadou Thierno Gaye about the influence of climate variability on meningitis outbreaks. I am very interested in interannual variability of Sahelian rainfall and predictabilty and I have coordinated an important review , published in Journal of Climate, of the role of SSTs on Sahelian drought (Rodriguez-Fonseca et al., 2015).

Parallel to this, I have co-advised, together with Dra Elvira Zurita, the Ph D Thesis of Joaquim Adolfo Xavier, reconstructing the rainfall time series of Angola country in the war period.

In 2013 I start to lead the UCM team of the PREFACE project, in order to reduce current coupled models. This project ends in 2018. During this project a step forward in the knowledge of coupled model biases and tropical Atlantic predictability was done, and I partiipated in more than 10 papers dealing with tropical Atlantic varibility modes, predictability, model assessment and interbasin teleconnections.

I am interested in climate services. In collaboration with the Agronomical School of Engeneering, we had a strong collaboration with Margarita Ruiz Ramos (Universidad Politécnica) and we analysed the impact of climate variability in crop systems of the Iberian Peninsula, mainly maize and wheat ( PhD of Miram Capa-Morocho). Under this framework, I have coordinated a national project : MULCLIVAR in which the climate variability , the multidecadal variability and the impacts in agriculture, combining climate modeling and crop modelling. Also some statistical predictions have been undertaken.

From June 2019 we have been working in the european project TRIATLAS and, in particular, in analysing physical drivers of marine ecosystems. We are creating an atlas of ocean predictors that could affect teleconnections with  upwelling regions, impacting on ecosystems. We have collaborated with Dr Malick Gaye, from the University of Saint Louis, finding how El Niño affect eh senegalese upwelling and the drivers of sea surface temperature variability in the region. I am currently advising a PhD about ecosystem predictability, in particular about chlorophyll-a predictability in the Mauritanian-Senegal region. I have been in charge of the workpackage about ecosystems drivers. From the knowhow gained during this project, I am currently leading a national project, together with Irene Polo , about how ecosystem predictability will change in future scenarios. In this project we are also working with changes in predictability in climate and health and energy. An important point will deal about how to comunicate these results to society trying to bring the gap between science and climate change awareness. From June 2019 we have been working in the european project TRIATLAS and, in particular, in analysing physical drivers of marine ecosystems.   In relation to atmospheric teleconnections in Europe, I am interested in the study of North Atlantic low frequency variability modes and predictability in present and future conditions  (PhDs of Javier García-Serrrano and Nube González Reviriego). We are also very interested in multidecadal modulations of the interanual climate variability  in the Euro-Atlantic region ( PhD Thesis of  Jorge Lopez Parages, Iñigo Gómara). Last year Maialen Martija defended her PhD under my advise and Jorge Lopez Parages aboutt he impact of El Niño in temperature and rainfall in the Norwest of Europe, including the northern Iberian peninsula. Her results put forward the nonstationarity of ENSO teleconnections and its potential predictability.

Due to the expertise gained in this topic, we are currently working on the thematic platform of climate https://pti-clima.csic.es/la-pti/ which mission is to advance climate research and provide reference climate services to different sectors (water, biodiversity, agriculture, energy, etc.) in the framework of national (including the National Climate Change Adaptation Plan, PNACC) and international (including IPCC, COPERNICUS, FAO) collaborations, enhancing participation and collaboration with companies and technological alliances. Under this pr

Regarding teleconnections within the tropics, I have advised different Thesis dealing with the tropical Atlantic (PhD Thesis of   Irene Polo, Teresa LosadaMarta Martin del Rey,  Roberto Suárez, Lander Crespo), includng Impacts on health and its predictability from the ocean (PhD of Ibrahima Diouf in collaboration with University Cheik Anta Diop in Dakar) and agriculture (PhD of Mirian Capa in collaboration with CEIGRAM). I  am also interested in coastal upwelling and in associated teleconnections  (PhD of Antonio Castaño and Elena Calvo (ongoing)). In particular Benguela and Mauritanian upwelling and their relation with ENSO. The reliability of coupled models in capturing teleconnections is a topic of research, but also the mechanisms involved in the different telconnections found.

My personal research is very focused in the analysis  interbasin teleconnections, being member of the Forum of discussion of CLIVAR TBI: tropical Atlantic impact on ENSO predictability and multidecadal modulations. This research has its origin in Rodriguez-Fonseca et al. (2009) in which we found how the Atlantic Niños appear connected in summer with the tropical Pacific SSTs from the 1970's, and how the Pacific ENSO has predictability from the Atlantic.  Since 2009 we are very active in this emergent topic of research and I  have been collaborting . Nowadays I am convener of a sesion in AGU-Ocean Science Meeting about Interbasin Teleconnections.

Regarding south America, I have collaborated with Ecuador, Brazil and Uruguay. I am  very interested in how tropical Atlantic variability modes affect south American rainfall but also about ENSO teleconnections with marine ecosystems.

Also, I am very interested in bringuing the scientific culture to the general public and I am in charge of Meteolab, a virtual laboratory of simple experiences to explain the physics of the atmosphere and the ocean. I collaborate with schools, associations, museums and help highschool teachers to explain basic concepts about meteorology and climate, including antropogenic climate change, to schools.

I have researched for some periods at Scripps Institution of Oceanography (La Jolla, California), University of Washington (JISAO, Seattle) , University of California at Los Angeles (LA). I have spent 4 months at the University of Bergen (Bjerknes Center) in two visits in 2010 and 2014 and  I has also been invited to the MPI  for collaboration (Hamburg). Nowadays I am working in collaboration  with UCLA (LA, USA),  Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC), UiB (Norwayy), LOCEAN (Paris), University of Dakar, Met office (UK), ICTP (Trieste) and with the University of Salamanca (USAL), University of Vigo, BSC, University of Barcelona (BA), and University of Castilla-La Mancha (UCLM) in Spain. In 2023 I spent 2 months in the University of Santa Cruz in CAlifornia (UCSC, CA), working about the Californian marine ecosystem predictability.

In general, I can say that my research lines cover Climate Variability, Tropical Atlantic Variability, Interbasin teleconnections,  North Atlantic atmospheric teleconnections, Air-Sea interactions in the Atlantic, West African Monsoon, tropical-extratropical teleconnections, statistical climatology and numerical modelling
